Today's national 30-year mortgage interest rate trends

On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the current average interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage is 7.03%, rising 3 basis points compared to this time last week. If you're looking to refinance your current mortgage, today's national average interest rate for a 30-year fixed refinance is 7.18%, increasing 2 basis points over the last seven days. Whether you're buying your dream home or adding to your investment portfolio, now is the time to seize the opportunity.

Homebuyer demand pushes mortgage applications higher, even as interest rates inch up again (CNBC)


·         The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances ($726,200 or less) increased to 6.78% from 6.75%.

·         Applications to refinance a home loan fell 7% for the week and were 8% lower than the same week one year ago.

Despite a slight increase in mortgage rates last week, homebuyers showed resilience as mortgage applications for home purchases rose by 8%. However, this surge in demand was still 18% lower than the same period the previous year. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages also saw a modest increase to 6.78%, contributing to the ongoing upward trend in purchase activity. On the other hand, applications for refinancing experienced a 7% decline for the week and an 8% drop compared to the previous year. With current rates higher than the previous year and well above the levels seen two years ago, the incentive for refinancing remains limited for most borrowers. The average rate for the 30-year fixed now stands at 6.92%, showing a continued fluctuation in rates at the beginning of this week.
